Akbar

Akbar is a coastal municipality in the province of Basilan, Philippines, officially established on December 20, 2005, through the Muslim Mindanao Autonomy Act No. 193. Named after Imam Akbar Marani, a notable Islamic preacher and descendant of Sultan Kudarat, the municipality was formed from nine barangays that were formerly part of Tuburan, including one island barangay.  

As of the 2020 census, Akbar has a population of 23,098 people and covers a land area of 182.01 square kilometers. The municipality is politically subdivided into nine barangays: Caddayan, Linongan, Lower Bato-bato, Mangalut, Manguso, Paguengan, Semut, Upper Bato-bato, and Upper Sinangkapan.  

Akbar's economy is primarily based on agriculture, with residents engaged in farming and fishing activities. The municipality's coastal location along the Celebes Sea provides abundant marine resources, supporting the livelihoods of local fishermen.
