Piñan (formerly New Piñan) is a 4th-class landlocked municipality in Zamboanga del Norte, located in the Zamboanga Peninsula region of Mindanao. It spans an area of about 93.75 km² and reported a population of 20,221 in the 2020 census. Established on August 22, 1951—via Executive Order No. 467 by President Elpidio Quirino—and inaugurated later that year, Piñan became officially recognized under Republic Act No. 2846 on June 19, 1960. Its name is rooted in Subanen culture: either from “pinyayan,” meaning trading place, reflecting its historical role as a market center in Barangay Del Pilar, or from “piña,” due to abundant pineapple plantations in its early years.
Politically, Piñan is divided into 22 barangays: Adante, Bacuyong, Bagong Silang, Calican, Del Pilar, Desin, Dilawa, Dionum, Lapulapu, Lower Gumay, Luzvilla, Poblacion North, Poblacion South, Santa Fe, Segabe, Sikitan, Silano, Teresita, Tinaytayan, Ubay (Daan Tipan), Upper Gumay, and Villarico. Notable barangays include Poblacion North—the most densely populated area—and Luzvilla, home to the scenic Luzvilla Falls and Boboringan Hills, natural landmarks within the municipality.
